Psychological Survival Skills for New Lawyers

Course level

Intermediate

Delegates

This course is suitable for trainee solicitors and those with up to 3 years PQE can benefit from attending this course because learning how to deal with potentially stressful situations early on in one’s career can increase confidence and optimise performance. Wherever possible, the course material is based on research studies, so that its concepts have empirical support, and delegates are given recommendations as to further reading which can help them to explore these concepts further.

Overview

This one-day course introduces delegates to evidence-based psychological concepts which can help them to survive and flourish when faced with the demands of the early years as a lawyer. As an interactive and practical course, it is designed to enable delegates to identify their own challenges, build on positive attributes and develop techniques to combat difficulties.

Session 1: Pressure

How each individual perceives a situation influences the way in which it is experienced. This session helps you to:

  • Differentiate between positive and negative stressors
  • Understand how the brain’s early warning alarm system activates in response to a stressor
  • Identify types of stressors for you individually
  • Examine how you deal with them and how successful your methods are
  • Consider possible new ways of managing stressors based on empirical evidence

Session 2: Managing multiple supervisors and managing time

Conflicting demands are common stressors in the workplace which can cause anxiety and depletion of internal resources. This session helps you to:

  • Understand the interplay within the brain of two systems in planning, organisation and procrastination
  • Use practical techniques to help you set goals and manage deadlines
  • Appreciate the difference between aggressive, assertive and passive behaviour
  • Practice techniques to deal assertively with conflicting demands

Session 3: Resilience

Just as potentially stressful situations are perceived differently by individuals, their responses also differ. This session helps you to:

  • Understand the multiple features of resilience
  • Use effective cognitive and behavioural strategies to deal with negative stressors
  • Know how to exercise and increase your willpower
  • Learn how mindfulness techniques can help you focus on the present and manage your emotions

"A CPD certificate of completion will be provided by BPP Professional Education Limited upon request, following attendance."
