Overview

Do you sometimes struggle to get your message across? What would you do if you were a great communicator: how would your personal and professional life change for the better? Evidence shows that interpersonal skills, like being an effective communicator, are the greatest predictor of success amongst professionals of a similar background and IQ. Yet communication skills are rarely, if ever, taught as part of our schooling or higher education. The good news is that they can be learnt and the fact that you are reading this suggests that you could be ready to learn and develop them to become more successful, resourceful and influential.

Areas covered include:

  • Effective communication
  • The impact of poor questioning and listening
  • Good questioning skills
  • Good listening skills
  • Putting it into practice

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course delegates should be able to:

  • Communicate more effectively
  • Gain new information through effective questioning techniques
  • Pick up on hidden messages
  • Actively listen for feelings as well as meanings
  • Use techniques to check and build the understanding of others
  • Increase your confidence when communicating face-to-face
  • Create a Personal Development Plan to address real life communication challenges and growth opportunities.

"A certificate of completion will be provided by BPP Professional Education Limited upon request, following attendance."

Under the SRA’s new approach to continuing competence, solicitors are expected to use the Statement of Solicitor Competence to identify and address their learning and development needs. The competence statement requires the following competencies:
  • A - Ethics, professionalism and judgement
  • B - Technical legal practice
  • C - Working with other people
  • D - Managing themselves and their own work
