This course will be of benefit to all lawyers starting out on their career path and will provide a thorough grounding in the commercial and managerial aspects of a legal practice.


This highly interactive workshop will inspire delegates to take a real interest in business and management and go on to contribute to the financial and leadership success of their firm.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the current legal market place and trends and the impact of competition
  • Identify the key issues affecting the business and profitability of a law firm including pricing challenges
  • Understand the basics of law firm financial information
  • Appreciate the basic challenges affecting a modern law firm and the implications of failure to properly manage law firm finance
  • Classify what financial information fee earners need and how this should be used to take a pro-active role supporting partners in ensuring the firm is profitable
  • Develop a marketing plan to increase business for the practice via networking, cross-selling and social media
  • Demonstrate good client care and be able to successfully manage client expectations
  • Know how to handle complaints effectively
  • Understand the difference between leadership, management and supervisions
  • Develop the leadership and team management skills necessary for their first management post including effective delegation
  • Know how to influence and motivate staff and provide valuable feedback for continuous improvement
  • Write an action plan to continue what they have learnt in classroom

      Under the SRA’s new approach to continuing competence, solicitors are expected to use the Statement of Solicitor Competence to identify and address their learning and development needs. The competence statement requires the following competencies:

    • D - Managing themselves and their own work
