About the exam

The CPI exam is a test of insolvency competence and consists of a single three-hour paper, held once a year, set by the Insolvency Practitioners Association (IPA).

Forty per cent of the paper is allocated to multiple-choice and short form questions, while the remaining 60% is based on essay style questions.

Approximately two thirds of the marks will be for corporate insolvency matters, while the remaining third will be for personal insolvency matters.

A copy of the most recent version of the syllabus is available from the IPA. Results are usually available at the end of August.

Introductory courses

If you're new to insolvency and are planning to take the Certificate in Proficiency in Insolvency, you could consider taking one of our one-day insolvency awareness courses first. Designed to help students understand what insolvency is, they are particularly useful if you are changing career or discipline from other areas of practice.

Choose from:

  • Understanding Corporate Insolvency
  • Understanding Corporate Accounts
  • Understanding Personal Insolvency

Scottish variant

The IPA runs a Scottish variant of the CPI examination based on Scottish legislation. BPP materials and courses are not therefore applicable for the Scottish version – please contact the IPA for further details.

Key dates

If you wish to sit the CPI exam in June, you must be registered as an IPA student by the 'cut-off date' at the end of January.

You then need to submit an entry form and pay the exam fee by the IPA's closing date – normally around 20 March.

It's important to note that it's your responsibility to register with the IPA and to pay your CPI exam fees which are not included in BPP course fees.
